Consider the following statements regarding the weaver's method of crop combination.

A) He proposed a method of analysis superior to the simple inspection of the relative weights of the enterprises in a given area.

B) He added a time dimension to the notion that Britain's best and worst agricultural land has not changed during the last century.

C) He sought to find the number of enterprises that minimized the difference between the actual and theoretical enterprise combinations.

D) He adopted a measure of yield defined as the potential production of one acre of good average farmland under good management.

Choose the correct answer from the options given below:

1. A, B and C only
2. A, C and D only
3. A and B only

Correct Answer - Option 4 : A and C only

Crop combination.:

  • It is related to the diversity of crops grown in a particular area at a specific time
  • It is the main basis of agricultural regionalization
  • Crop combination also helps to understand the crop distribution in an area
  • It helps to understand the density and concentration of individual crops and their assemblage in a region
  • Sometimes livestock was also taken into consideration for the ranking
  • There are two methods of crop combination
  • Arbitrary choice method
  • Statistical method
  • The methods suggested by J. C. Weaver, Doi, and Rafiullah all are statistical methods of crop combination

Crop combination by J. C. Weaver:

  • J. C. Weaver proposed a scheme of crop combination in 1954
  • It was based on a statistical analysis
  • Here he used the variance and standard deviation method
  • Collect the data about the total cropped area of a region
  • Identify the area under each crop
  • Calculate the percentage using the formula
  • Percentage of area = (area under each crop/total cropped area)*100
  • Based on the percentage do the ranking

Calculate the variance and standard deviation

Crop The area under each crop (hector) Total cropped area (hector) Percentage Rank
Rice 110   55 1
Wheat 50   25 2
Gram 20 200 10 3
Bajra 14   7 4
Maize 6   3 5
