Cloud is a mass of minute water droplets or tiny crystals of ice formed by the condensation of the water vapour in free air at considerable elevations. As the clouds are formed at some height over the surface of the earth, they take various shapes.

Classification of clouds is based on a combination of forms, heights, and appearance.

There are 4 major cloud type 

  • high clouds(20000-40000 feet)
  • medium clouds(7000-20000 feet)
  • low clouds(below-7000 feet)
  • clouds with great vertical extent(2000-30000 feet)

high clouds

  • cirrus(Ci)
    • looks like fibrous
    • appears like a wisp in a blue sky
    • called mares tail
    • fair weather, brilliant sunshine
  • cirrocumulus(Cc)
    • appears like globular masses
    • forms ripple in a mackerel sky
  • cirrostratus(Cs)
    • looks like a thin white sheet
    • the sky looks milky and sun and moonshine through it
    • characteristic halo

medium clouds

  • altocumulus(Ac)
    • woolly bumpy clouds arranged in layers
    • appears like a wave in the blue sky
    • indicates fine weather
  • altostratus(As)
    • denser greyish cloud, with a watery look
    • the fibrous structure through which sunshine faintly

low clouds

  • stratocumulus(St-Cu)
    • rough bumpy clod with waves pronounced than altocumulus
    • great contrast between the bright and shaded part
  • stratus(St)
    • very low cloud
    • uniformly grey and thick
    • appears like low sealing or highland fog
    • dull weather with drizzle reduced visibility
  • nimbostratus(Ni-St)
    • dark dull cloud, clearly layered
    • known as a rain cloud
    • it brings continuous rain snow or sleet

clouds with a great vertical extent

  • cumulus(Cu)
    • vertical cloud with a rounded top and horizontal base
    • typical of the humid tropical region
    • associated with uprising conventional currents
    • great white globular masses
    • fair weather clod
  • cumulonimbus(Cu-Ni)
    • overgrown cumulus cloud
    • tremendous vertical height(2000-30000 feet)
    • black and white globular masses
    • cauliflower top or anvil shape
    • seen in tropical afternoon
    • referred to as thunder cloud and brings convectional rain, lightning, and thunder
