  • On 9 April 2013, the Madhya Pradesh state government decided to declare Malkhamb as the State Sport. 
  • The origin of Malakhamb can be traced to the 12th century, where it is mentioned in Manas-Olhas - a classic by Chalukya in 1135 A.D.
  • For seven centuries, the art lay dormant, till it was revived by Balambhatta Dada Deodhar, the sports and fitness instructor to Peshwa Bajirao II.

  • Competitively, there are several versions but three variations of Mallakhamb sport are in practice since 1937:
    • Pole Mallakhamb.
    • Hanging Mallakhamb.
    • Rope Mallakhamb.
