Correct Answer - Option 3 : 93,600

Given:

28% of the total votes polled are invalid and the winner got 43,200 more votes than the losing candidate who got 35% votes.

Concepts used:

Total number of votes = Number of invalid votes + number of valid votes

Calculation:

Let the total number of votes polled be x.

28% of the total votes polled are invalid

Invalid votes = 0.28x

Total number of votes = Number of invalid votes + number of valid votes

⇒ x = 0.28x + number of valid votes

⇒ Number of valid votes = x – 0.28x = 0.72x

Losing candidate got 35% votes.

⇒ Votes gained by losing candidate = 35% of 0.72x

Total valid votes = Votes gained by winner + votes gained by losing candidate

⇒ 0.72x = Votes gained by winner + 0.252x

⇒ Votes gained by winner = 0.72x – 0.252x

⇒ Votes gained by winner = 0.468x

The winner got 43,200 more votes than the losing candidate who got 35% votes.

⇒ 0.468x – 0.252x = 43,200

⇒ 0.216x = 43,200

⇒ x = 43,200/0.216

⇒ x = 2,00,000 votes

Votes obtained by winner = 0.468x = 0.468 × 2,00,000 votes

= 93,600 votes

∴ Winner candidate got 93,600 votes.
