Correct Answer - Option 1 : 400

Given:

In an exam, marks of student E increased by 45% and then reduced by 40% due to which final marks obtained by E were less than the original marks by 52.

Concepts used:

Original marks - Final marks = Reduced marks

Calculation:

Let the original marks obtained by E be x.

In an exam, marks of student E increased by 45% and then reduced by 40%.

Marks after increment of 45% = x + 0.45x = 1.45x

Marks after reduction by 40% = 1.45x × (100 – 40)/100 = 0.87x

Final marks = 0.87x

Final marks obtained by E were less than the original marks by 52.

⇒ x - 0.87x = 52

⇒ 0.13x = 52

⇒ x = 52/0.13

⇒ x = 400 marks

∴ Original marks obtained by E are equal to 400.
