Correct Answer - Option 1 : solid, liquid

The correct answer is option 1) i.e. solid, liquid

CONCEPT:

  • Electric current is defined as the amount of charge flowing per unit time. It is given by

\(I = \frac{q}{t}\)

Where I is current, q is the charge and t is the time.

  • Conduction in solids:
    • Atoms of conducting materials have free electrons in them.
    • When a potential difference is set up across a conducting wire, the electric field produced mobilizes the free electrons. This causes the movement of electrons and thus produces current.
  • Conduction in liquids:
    • An ionic compound dissolved in a liquid dissociates into the pair of negative and positive ions.
    • When a voltage is applied across electrodes placed in the liquid, the ions present in it start moving.
    • The positive ions drift towards the cathode (negative electrode) and the negative ions drift towards the anode (positive electrode).
    • This movement of ions causes the conduction of current in liquids.

EXPLANATION:

  • Conduction in solids is due to the flow of electrons. So, medium A is solid.
  • Conduction in liquids is due to the flow of ions. So, medium B is liquid.
