Aids used by the teacher to facilitate the teaching-learning process is known as teaching material/teaching-learning materials or teaching aids. It can be made and used by both students and teachers. The appropriate use of teaching material in a classroom makes the learning relatively permanent. It should be noted that teaching material should be used by the teachers based on the objectives of the lesson.

Teaching materials can be classified as:

  • Visual aids
  • Audio aids
  • Audio-visual aids

Blackboard is the most important visual aid in the teaching-learning process.

  • It is the most common teaching aid in the classroom.
  • The use of colour chalks makes the blackboard work more attractive.
  • It is an important part of the classroom. It is black in colour but now in some places, the colour has made green as green colour is useful for eyesight.

  • Visual Aids: The aids which call upon the visual senses and thus help the learners to learn through viewing. The important and under this head are Blackboard, Charts, Pictures, Graphs, Models, Film strips, Slides, puppet, flashcards, games, etc.
  • Audio-Visual Aids: The devices which require the auditory as well as visual senses and helping the students to learn through listening as well as viewing. Examples of such aids are television, films, and computer-assisted instruction.
  • Audio aids relating to the ear or to the sense of hearing aural sensations. These mainly stimulate the hearing sense of the learner. This includes telephonic conversations, audio discs/tapes, gramophone records, radio broadcasts. The materials or devices which call upon the auditory senses and thus help the individuals to learn through listening e.g. Radio broadcasts, Cassette and CD player.

Hence, it can be concluded that the most common teaching material is the blackboard.
