The Two - Kingdom classification given by Linnaeus is considered inadequate presently because of:
1. A large number of organisms did not fall into either plants or animals only.
2. Not distinguishing photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic plants (fungi) separately only.
3. Not distinguishing prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms separately only.
4. All of these.

Correct Answer - Option 4 : All of these.

Concept-

  • Carolus Linnaeus referred to as the father of taxonomy, father of plant taxonomy, and father of animal taxonomy.
  • Linnaeus gave the two-kingdom system classification.
  • This system was used till very recently.
  • He grouped plants and animals into two kingdoms-
    • Plantae and kingdom Animalia respectively.

Explanation-

  • The two-kingdom classification used for a long time was found inadequate because-
    • This system did not distinguish between eukaryotes and prokaryotes.
    • Unicellular and multicellular organisms.
    • Did not distinguish photosynthetically (green algae) and non-photosynthetic (fungi) organisms.
    • A large number of organisms neither fall into plant nor animal kingdom like Lichens.

  • The five-kingdom system proposed by R.H. Whittaker (1969) is now the foremost widely used.
  • The kingdom defined by him were named Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.
