Given below are two statements:

Statement I: Emissions of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide are inherently very low

 from diesel vehicles.

Statement II: Diesel driven vehicles are inherently more fuel-efficient compared to petrol-driven vehicles.

In the light of the above statements. choose the most appropriate answer from the options

 given below:
1. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
2. Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
3. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
4. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Correct Answer - Option 1 : Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

Difference Between Petrol and Diesel Engine

Diesel Engine

Petrol Engine

  • These engines work on the Diesel cycle
  • Works on the Otto cycle
  • The fuel is mixed with air inside the cylinder
  • Air and the fuel are mixed in a carburettor
  • Ignition is achieved with the help of the hot, compressed air.
  • Fuel is ignited with an electric spark
  • High compression ratio
  • Relatively low compression ratio
  • High power production
  • Relatively low amounts of power are produced in a Petrol engine
  • These engines work with fuels that have low volatilities
  • Highly volatile fuels are used in these internal combustion engines
  • Generally used in heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses
  • Used in light vehicles such as motorcycles and cars.
  • Relatively low fuel consumption
  • High fuel consumption.
  • High initial and maintenance costs
  • Comparatively low initial cost and maintenance cost
  • diesel has higher emissions of NOx and much higher emissions of particulate matter.
  • In a petrol car, these can be cleaned up by a three-way catalytic converter so that it emits on average around 30% less NO than a diesel car.
  • diesel cars emit fewer hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and lead pollution than petrol cars, but
  • produce more noxious gases and significantly more particulates
  • Produces more hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide
  • Diesel engines generally achieve greater fuel efficiency than petrol (gasoline) engines.
  • It has low fuel efficiency.

Conclusion: From the above discussion we come to the conclusion that both the types of engines have their own merits and demerits. But above given both the statements are true regarding diesel and petrol engine. Hence, option (1) is correct.
