Given below are two statements: One is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R):

Assertion (A): Random Access Memory (RAM) is volatile and stores data/programs currently in use.

Reason (R): RAM is a storage medium that retains its contents even after the supply of electricity has been turned off.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

1. Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
2. Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is NOT the correct explanation of (A)
3. (A) is true but (R) is false
4. (A) is false but (R) is true

Correct Answer - Option 3 : (A) is true but (R) is false

Random- Access Memory (RAM)

  • Random-access memory is a form of computer memory that can be read and changed in any order, typically used to store working data and machine code.
  • RAM (Random Access Memory) is the hardware in a computing device where the operating system (OS), application programs, and data in current use are kept so they can be quickly reached by the device's processor
  • random-access memory device allows data items to be read or written in almost the same amount of time irrespective of the physical location of data inside the memory.
  • RAM is the main memory in a computer. It is much faster to read from and write to than other kinds of storage, such as a hard disk drive (HDD), solid-state drive (SSD), or optical drive.
  • In today's technology, random-access memory takes the form of integrated circuit (IC) chips with MOS (metal-oxide-semiconductor) memory cells.
  • Random Access Memory is volatile. That means data is retained in RAM as long as the computer is on, but it is lost when the computer is turned off.

Thus, we come to the conclusion that RAM is the hardware in the computing device where data in current use is kept so that they can be easily reached by the processor.

The memory of RAM is volatile mean data is retained in RAM as long as the computer is on and once the computer is turned off, all the data in RAM is lost.

So, the statement I is true while statement II is false. Hence, option (3) is correct.
