Correct Answer - Option 3 : b, c, e only

  • The classroom is an excellent example of a place of communication in group situations where teachers spend hours communicating with students to share information and knowledge.
  • Classroom communication takes place between teacher and learners and among learners both formal (in form of formal lecture) as well as informal discussions.
  • Here, listening to the messages of the teacher, students decode the same as per their understanding and knowledge.
  • It involves speaking, lecturing, describing, explaining, illustrating on the part of the teacher, and engaging the students in debate, dialogue, and discussion. Learners raise questions, doubts, and queries to make their difficulties explicit which need to be effectively responded to and addressed by the teacher.
  • The strength of this approach lies in facilitating maximum feedback, warmth, and interaction. Hence, option d is completely incorrect.
  • A teacher has to be a good speaker and at the same time has to be a patient and attentive listener for his/ her learners. Active listening is different from just hearing and requires activities such as hearing, understanding i.e. attaching meaning to what is heard and judging and thinking about it.
  • Hence, from the above discussion, we can conclude that Classroom communication involves- Formal lecturing, Informal discussions and Explaining.

Good classroom communication involves:

  • Clarity of message: the language and objective of communication should be well defined, simple, brief, and clear.  Short and simple sentences can express an idea completely, coherently, and cogently.
  • Reinforcement of ideas: Simple expressions and words of everyday usage can be used instead of difficult or technical words for clarity of the message. However, it is important to understand that the message should not be repetitive and boring while keeping in mind the level of the audience.
  • Appropriate channel: the selection of channels to communicate entirely depends upon the type and objective of communication. The channel should be simple, low-cost, easy to access, meet the objective of communication, and convey the message more effectively.
  • Motivation:  In the communication process it is important to encourage the receiver to express their views, opinions, and doubts. The interactive process needs to be done by posing questions for the participation of the receivers. Appreciation of the views of receivers increases their self-esteem and build confidence.
  • Proper environment: a comfortable environment like proper seating arrangement, visibility of the source makes the communication easy and smooth.
  • Feedback: Feedback facilitates the understanding of the needs and views of the receivers. Also, it bridges the gap between receivers and improves the process of communication.
