Correct Answer - Option 1 : 40°

Concepts:

The maximum degree of curve permitted on railways depends on type of gauge being used in that area. In general, the maximum degree of curve permissible for different type of gauge is:

10° on the broad gauge,

16° on the meter gauge,

40° on the narrow gauge.

The hills or mountain areas,  generally it is recommended to use Narrow gauge due speed restrictions and  steep slopes. Therefore, Curvatures of up-to 400 are normally adopted for hills or mountain railways.

According to Indian railways, the clear distance between the inner faces of two rails for the different type of gauges are:

Gauge

Distance between Rails

Broad Gauge

1.676 m

Meter Gauge

1.0 m

Narrow Gauge

0.762

The clear distance between the inner faces of two rails for the broad gauge is 1.676 m, i.e 1676 mm
