The correct answer is a - ii, b - iii, c - iv, d - i.

  • Podu is an Indian tribal agricultural practise in which different parts of jungle forest are cleared each year by burning to provide land for crops. Telugu is the language in which the word was coined.
  • Jhum in Assam, punam krishi in Kerala, podu in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa, bewar, mashan, penda, and beera in various sections of Madhya Pradesh are all terms for shifting agriculture in India.
  • Tribal people employ shifting farming. Every year, around 20 lakh hectares of forest are cleared by falling and burning trees and plants.
  • These clearings are cultivated for 2-3 years using very primitive and expensive methods, then abandoned when fertility declines, soil erosion renders it inappropriate, or trees regrow.
  • On the burnt over clearings, paddy, buck wheat, maize, millets, tobacco, some vegetables, and banana are produced, and the products are divided by the clan.
