Correct Answer - Option 3 : Abstract, mechanical and social

Intelligence refers to the capacity to acquire and apply knowledge. It is the ability to solve problems, learn from experiences, and apply knowledge to deal with new situations.

There are many theories related to intelligence. These theories are propounded by eminent psychologists to provide a framework to understand different aspects of human intelligence.

Multi-factor theory of Intelligence was Proposed by 'Thorndike'. In this theory, he advocated that there is nothing like general innate ability.

  • According to this theory, Intelligence is said to be constituted of a multitude of separate factors or elements. Any mental act according to this theory involves a number of these minute elements, operating together.
  • Thorndike believed that intelligence involves three mutually independent abilities which are abstract, mechanical/concrete, and Social Intelligence.

Let's Understand in Brief:

  • Social Intelligence: It refers to the ability to understand and deal with persons.
  • MechanicalConcrete intelligence: It refers to the ability to understand and deal with things, as in skilled trades and scientific appliances.
  • Abstracts intelligence: It refers to the ability to understand and deal with verbal and mathematical symbols.

Hence, it could be concluded that Abstract, mechanical and social are the three categories of intelligence by Thorndike.
