Effective teaching, by and large, is a function of the teacher's favourable attitude towards teaching as effective teaching and learning process depends on the attitude and behaviour of the teacher.

Teaching is a process related to the effective transmission of knowledge and skills in an individual. It limits or enhances the ways the learners learn and assimilate concepts and ideas.

Effective Teaching involves a relationship in order for students to focus their cognitive resources on learning, they have to feel safe and supported."- Dr. Kathy Mc Knight.

Following are the key behaviour of effective teaching:

  • The main objective of effective teaching is learning.
  • The teacher should take feedback from students and inculcate them while making presentations or teaching aids.
  • The teacher should also keep in mind the students with different levels of understanding.
  • A helpful teacher encourages students to participate in class discussions and contribute their ideas, by using meaningful verbal praise.
  • A positive body language of the teacher, showing enthusiasm through eye contact, gestures, and voice help in building a positive and helpful relationship with students.
  • A teacher should pre-determine the outcome of learning and let the learners know what will they gain after the teaching.
  • To determine whether the teaching has facilitated learning, evaluation is carried out. Beforehand planning and deciding what tools will be used for evaluation helps the teachers to effectively plan a lecture.
  • Depending on the nature of the content of teaching, different evaluation methods can be used like formative or summative evaluation.
  • A teacher should be aware of its learner's background and prior knowledge.
  • There might be variation among learners with respect to their age, cultural background, emotional makeup, and needs.
  • Different learners have different learning styles and they interpret the same teaching in different ways. 
  • Therefore, it is advisable that while deciding a teaching plan to cater to the needs of every learner, learner characteristics should be kept in mind.
  • variety of strategies and tactical methods should be used for different learners to achieve a particular objective.

Therefore, using the ideas of students and taking help in structuring while making presentations and probing to add and seek classifications of ideas are indicative of helping behaviour of effective teaching.

  • Consolidation of the lesson at the end of class
  • Diagnose student's problems/errors and rectify them that can be systematically measured by observing classroom and by asking students
