The ratio of the present ages of Rahul and his sister is 3 ∶ 4. 5 years ago, the ratio of their ages was 13 ∶ 19. What is Rahul’s present age (in years)?

Given:

The ratio of the present ages of Rahul and his sister is 3 ∶ 4.

Calculations:

Let Rahul’s present age be 3x years and his sister’s present age be 4x years.

5 years ago

Rahul’s age = (3x – 5) years

His sister’s age = (4x – 5) years

So, (3x – 5)/(4x – 5) = 13/19

⇒ 57x – 95 = 52x – 65

⇒ 57x – 52x = 95 – 65 

⇒ 5x = 30 

⇒ x = 6

Rahul’s present age = 6 × 3 = 18 years

∴ Rahul's present age is 18 years.
