Bharhut

  • Bharut sculpture, early Indian sculpture belong to the Shunga period (mid-2nd century BCE) , in Madhya Pradesh.
  • It has been largely destroyed, and most of the existing remains, railings and entrance gateways are now in Indian Museum in Kolkata (Calcutta).
  • The Bharhut style, marks the beginnings of a tradition of Buddhist narrative relief and decoration of sacred buildings that continued for several centuries.
  • Sculptures similar to the Bharhut remains are located throughout northern India.

 

Jaggeyapeta

  • Around 70 kms north-west from Amravati, lies the remains of one of the oldest stupa of Andhra PradeshJaggeyapeta.
  • The great Buddhist stupas of Jaggeyapeta  date back to 2nd century BCE .
  • Over time , the Jaggeyapeta stupa turned into a mound, which the locals called 'Dhana Bodu' or 'Hill of Wealth'.
  • Later the valuable fragments from Jaggeyapeta were used to built houses or palaces.

 

 Bhumara

  • The Bhumara temple belongs to the Gupta period ( 5th or 6th-century CE).
  • This is a Shiva temple located at Satna , Madhya Pradesh has also yielded some sculpture of fine quality.
  • The stone is carved with great precision and skill, nowhere more evident than in the handling of exuberant floral ornament. 
  • Many of its ruined parts and statues are now at major museums in India and elsewhere.
  • The temple is the source of one of the oldest known Ganesha relief.

 

Tanjavur

  • Thanjavur (Tanjavur or Tanjore) is a temple site in the Tamil Nadu region of southern India.
  • Thanjavur was the capital of the great Chola king Rajaraja I.
  • Thanjavur was at the height of its glory during the Chola period between the 10th and the 14th century CE and became a great centre of learning and culture.
  •  Thanjavur is one of the most important and most visited historical sites in India today.
