Correct Answer - Option 3 : Punjab, Nepal and North-West Frontier Province
  • During the First World War, the Indian Army sent five expeditionary forces abroad, to Europe, East Africa, Iraq, and Egypt.
  • At the beginning of November 1914, one-third of the British army on the Western Front came from India regions such as - Punjab, Nepal and North-West Frontier Province. They fought for the Indian Army Corps, a mixed British and Indian force of two infantry and two cavalry divisions.
  • The corps served in France and Belgium from 26 September 1914 to Boxing Day 1915. Overall it contained 20748 British and 89335 Indian soldiers sent from the subcontinent, supported by 49273 Indian labourers.
  • It fought in the front line at Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, and Loos, and suffered 34252 combatant casualties. Since the First World War, the judgement that the corps was a failure has been upheld by professional opinion.
