Directions: A statement is given followed by two inferences I and II. You have to consider the statement to be true even if it seems to be at variance from commonly known facts. You have to decide which of the given inferences, if any, follow from the given statement.

Statement: No one could deny Wheatley's remarkable achievement in being the first African American of either sex to publish a book in colonial America, a time and place where slaves' very humanity was questioned.

Inference:

I. Wheatly was the First African American lady to be educated.

II. Wheatly was an African American slave.

1.

Only I follows.

2. Only II follows.
3.

Correct Answer - Option 4 :

Neither I nor II follows.

The statement mentions that Wheatly was the first African American to publish a book. It was a remarkable achievement because during that time slaves were not even considered humans.

From what has been supplied we only know that she was the first African American to get a book published, in very unfavorable situations but cannot deduce that no other African American prior to Wheatly was educated. Also, we do not know for sure that Wheatly was a lady. Therefore, the inference I does not follow.

The statement recognizes the publishing of books as an achievement since slaves at that point in time were not even considered humans. We know that Wheatly was an African American and the reference has been made to Colonial America. But it is not definite that Wheatly was also a slave. So the inference II does not follow.

Hence, Neither I nor II follows.
