Correct Answer - Option 2 : An inert

The correct answer is An inert.

CONCEPT:

  • Metals have a tendency to lose electrons yielding positive ions. Eg : Na → Na+ + 1e
  • This tendency gives rise to metallic character of an element.
  • Non-metals have a tendency to gain electrons yielding negative ions. Eg: Cl+1e–  → Cl

EXPLANATION:

  • An atom that can neither gain nor loses electrons is called an inert atom.
  • The elements in group 18 are called inert gases because they neither gain nor lose electrons.
  • They have very little tendency to form chemical compounds with other elements.
  • They have a highly stable electronic configuration in their outer shell.
