  • After the Mauryan rule Pushyamitra, the founder of the Shunga dynasty established his rule.
    • The Sungas ruled for over a hundred years.
    • The extent of the Sunga kingdom under Pushyamitra extended from Punjab and extended to the southern regions of the Narmada.
    • The Sunga dynasty had a line of ten rulers.
    • The last of the Sunga king was Devabhuti.

  • Chandragupta Maurya is the founder of the Mauryan dynasty.
    • In the wake of the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BCE, Chandragupta (or Chandragupta Maurya), conquered the Punjab region from the southeastern edges of Alexander’s former empire.
  • Chola Dynasty
    • Vijayalaya Chola (846-907 AD): He was a vassal of the Pallavas. He captured Tanjore from the Pandyas and made it the capital of the Cholas.
    • Aditya  I (871-907 AD): Extended the work of Vijayalaya by occupying the territories from the Pallavas.
    • Parantaka Chola I (907-955 AD): Was the first imperial Chola.
      • He defeated the Pandyans and Shrilankans initially but was later defeated by the Rashtrakuta king Krishna III. 
    • Raja Raja Chola I (907-1014 AD): Orchestrated the resurgence of the Cholas.
      • Raja Raja, I developed the naval strength of the Cholas
      • He re-organized the administrative system
      • In 1000 Ad he began the conduction of a land survey
      • He adopted the practice of inscribing the historical inscriptions
      • He began the practice of associating Yuvaraja or crown Prince with the administration
      • Raja Raja I being a patron of Shaivism constructed the great Raja Rajeshwar temple (Also called the Brihadeeswarar temple) at Tanjore.
    • Rajendra I (1014-44 AD):
      • He is considered the greatest Chola ruler.
      • He completed the conquest of Sri Lanka in 1017 AD and captured the whole of Sri Lanka and made it a part of the Chola empire. 
  • Origin of Gupta Empire
    • The Gupta Empire rose to prominence in 320 AD and spread to large parts of northern India, central and small parts of southern India.
    • The founder of the Gupta dynasty is Sri Gupta.
    • They are thought to be either Brahmins or Vaishyas.
