In the given questions, two equations numbered I and II are given. You have to solve both the equations and mark the appropriate answer.

I: x2 + 6x – 187 = 0

II: y2 + 34y + 253 = 0

1.

x > y

2.

x ≤ y

3.

Correct Answer - Option 3 :

x = y or the relationship between x and y cannot be established.

Calculation:

I: x2 + 6x – 187 = 0

⇒ x2 + 17x – 11x – 187 = 0

⇒ x × (x + 17) – 11× (x + 17) = 0

⇒ (x + 17) × (x – 11) = 0

⇒ x = 11, -17

II: y2 + 34y + 253 = 0

⇒ y2 + 23y + 11y + 253 = 0

⇒ y × (y + 23) + 11 × (y + 23) = 0

⇒ (y + 11) × (y + 23) = 0

⇒ y = -11, -23

Comparison between x and y (via Tabulation):

Value of x

relation

Value of y

11

-11

11

>

-23

-17

-11

-17

>

-23

From the table, we can conclude that x = y or relation cannot be established.
