Dara Shikoh had been given the title of ‘Sultan Buland Iqbal’ or Shahzada-e-Buland Iqba by Shah Jahan.
Dara Shikoh was the eldest son of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.
Shah Jahan declared Dara Shikoh as his successor.
He was appointed as Governor of Multan and Kabul in 1652.
In the war of succession, Dara Shikoh was defeated by Aurangzeb and executed in 1659 on his order.
Dara Shikoh was known to be Intellectual, liberal, and Sufi.
Some of his literary works are Tariqat ul-Haqiqat, Iksir-i Azam, Risaala-i Haq Numa, Sirr-e-Akbar etc.

There were four sons of Shah Jahan namely,
- Dara Shikoh
- Shah Suja
- Murad
- Aurangzeb
The war of succession was fought between the sons of Shah Jahan.
Although, Shah Jahan declared Dara Shikoh as his successor, ultimately Aurangzeb won the war of succession and declared himself the king.
In 1659, in the battle of Deorai, Aurangzeb defeated Dara Shikoh and executed him.
