Correct Answer - Option 3 : Approach - Approach conflict

The word conflict is derived from the Latin word configure meaning to strike together. Originally, it had a physical rather than moral connotation, though the English word has both. In the physical sense, it denotes two or more different things moving to occupy the same space at the same time, the logical inconsistency and the process of the solution being identical. For example, the logical inconsistency of two billiard balls being in the same place at the same time is resolved by the conflict which results in their rolling to two different positions.

Types of Conflicts: Conflict at the intra-individual level involves frustration, goal conflict, role conflict, and ambiguity. On the other hand, goal conflict can come from approach-approach, approach-avoidance, and avoidance-avoidance conflict. We generally identify three types of conflict:

  • Approach-Approach Conflict: The individual is motivated to approach two or more positive but mutually exclusive goals. Here the individual is motivated to approach two or more positive goals. For example, a student might get admission to two good institutions and has to decide between them. This is mildly stressful as one is not sure about one's choice. Two financial institutions are offering to sponsor the computer lab in your school. You have to choose between them. The above phrase is disclosing the Approach-Approach Conflict.
  • Approach-Avoidance Conflict: The individual is motivated by approach a goal and at the same time is motivated to avoid it. Here the individual is motivated to approach a goal and at the same time wants to avoid it. This goal contains both positive and negative characteristics of the individual. A student may get the subject of his/her choice but may dislike the teacher, for example. This compels him/her to carefully plan and forecast positive and negative outcomes. A teacher may get an excellent job but in a bad location. He/ she will then have feelings of approach and avoidance.
  • Avoidanc-Avoidance Conflict: The individual is motivated to avoid two or more negative but mutually exclusive goals.  Here the individual is motivated to avoid two or more negative but mutually exclusive goals. The teacher constantly belittles the student but the student cannot leave the class because the teacher will inform his/her parents or minus ten marks from the examination answer sheet. You may dislike your position as a headteacher but the option of leaving may be worse. This causes maximum stress. It is like the choice between the devil and the deep sea.

Hence, we can conclude that the phrase 'six on one hand, and half a dozen on other' best describes Approach-Approach Conflict.
