Correct Answer - Option 1 : Speed must change if velocity changes.

CONCEPT:

Velocity:

  • It is defined as the rate of change of the object’s position with respect to a frame of reference and time.
    • It is a vector quantity.

\(⇒ v = \frac{dx}{dt}\)

Acceleration:

  • It is defined as the rate of change of velocity with respect to a frame of reference.

\(⇒ a = \frac{dv}{dt}\)

Linear Momentum:

  • The linear momentum of a body is the quantity of motion contained in the body.
  • It is measured in terms of the force required to stop the body in unit time.
  • It is also measured as the product of the mass of the body and its velocity i.e.,

⇒ Momentum (p) = mass (m) × velocity (v)

⇒ P = mv

Speed:

  • It is defined as the distance covered per unit of time.
  • It is a scalar quantity.

CALCULATION:

  • The acceleration depends on the change in velocity of the object, so when the velocity changes the acceleration will not be zero. Therefore option 2 is correct.
  • The momentum is the product of mass and velocity, so when the velocity changes the momentum also changes. Therefore option 1 is correct.
  • If the direction of motion of the object changes without changing the magnitude of the velocity, then the speed will not change because speed is a scalar quantity. So speed must change if velocity changes is a wrong statement.
  • Hence, option 1 is correct.
