Correct Answer - Option 3 : The king never used him to collect taxes

Villages were an important part of large kingdoms. Kings extracted revenue from the villagers.

Gramabhojaka:

  • He was the village headman, and at times happened to be the largest landowner too
  • He owned a very large piece of land and got it cultivated by his slaves and hired workers.
  • He also functioned as a judge and sometimes as a policeman.
  • The post of a Gram-Bhojaka was hereditary. Usually, men from the same family held the position for generations.
  • Generally, he had slaves and hired workers to cultivate the land.

Hence, the statement 'The king never used him to collect taxes.' is not true regarding the Grama-Bhojaka.
