  • The Mahajanapadas were the 16 kingdoms that existed in Northern India from 6th - 4th centuries BCE. Anga and Magadha was part of those 16 Mahajanapadas.
  • Anga  - It finds reference in Atharvaveda and Mahabharata.The capital of Anga Mahajanapada was Champa/ Champanagari. It constitutes the present districts of Munger and Bhagalpur in Bihar and some areas of Bengal.
  • Anga was later annexed by Bimbisara in Magadha Empire which was his one and only conquest.
  • Magadha -  It also finds reference in Atharvaveda. The Kingdoms of Magadha corresponds to present-day districts of Patna, Gaya and Nalanda in Bihar. The earliest capital of Magadha was Giviraj or Rajagriha. Later Patliputra became its capital.
  • Magadha became an active centre for Jainism. Also, the first Buddhist council also held in Rajagriha.
