  • The constitution of India was framed by the constituent assembly.
  • The constituent assembly was set up on 6th December 1946, under the scheme formulated by the Cabinet mission plan.

 

  • The total strength of the constituent assembly was fixed at 389.
  • Out of this 389;
    • 296 seats were to be allotted to British India.
    • 93 seats were to be allotted to princely states.
  • Out of these 296 seats allotted to British India,
    • 292 members were to be drawn from the Governor's Provinces.
    • 4 members were drawn from the four Chief Commissioner's Provinces, one from each.
  • The membership of the constituent assembly was reduced to 299 after the partition of Pakistan.
