Correct Answer - Option 2 : Sensitivity to the meaning and order of words and the varied uses of language

Intelligence involves a number of abilities together. It is the ability to understand the incoming information and make sense out of it. It is the ability to acquire new skills and use the existing knowledge to complete a task or deal with a situation. Intelligence includes the capacity to understand novel stimuli, learning a language, and communicate with others, being aware of the environment, have the ability to reason, plan, and solve problems creatively.

Howard Gardner Multi-Dimensional Intelligence

  • Howard Gardener refuted the classic view of intelligence as a capacity for logical reasoning.
  • He proposed that there is not one form of intelligence but a certain number of intelligences work together.
  • According to him, intelligence is the “ability to solve problems or fashion products that are of consequence in a particular cultural setting or community” (1993).
  • Initially, he proposed eight distinct types of intelligence namely, naturalist, spatial, musical, logical-reasoning, interpersonal, bodily-kinesthetic, linguistic, and intra-personal.
  • Linguistic Intelligence
    • This intelligence includes the ability to effectively use language to express oneself rhetorically or poetically, and as a means to remember information.
    • Writers, poets, lawyers, and speakers are among those that Howard Gardner sees as having high linguistic intelligence.
    • This area has to do with words, spoken or written.
    • People with high verbal-linguistic intelligence display a facility with words and languages.
    • They are typically good at reading, writing, telling stories, and memorizing words along with dates.
    • They tend to learn best by reading, taking notes, listening to lectures, and discussing and debate.
    • Those with verbal-linguistic intelligence learn foreign languages very easily as they have high verbal memory and recall, and an ability to understand and manipulate syntax and structure.
    • Careers that suit those with this intelligence include writers, lawyers, policemen, philosophers, journalists, politicians, poets, and teachers.

From the above, sensitivity to the meaning and order of words and the varied uses of language illustrates a person with linguistic intelligence.
