Consider the following statements

Correct Answer - Option 2 : Only 1 and 3

The correct answer is Only 1 and 3.

  • Ozone depletion refers to the phenomena of reduction in the amount of ozone in the stratosphere. It is caused by high levels of chloride and bromine compounds in the stratosphere.
  • Ozone day is recognized on 16th September as on this day the Montreal Protocol was signed in 1987. Hence statement 2 is incorrect.
  • The theme for this year World Ozone Day 2020 Ozone for life: 35 years of ozone layer protection”.
  • Montreal Protocol was signed in 1987 and came into force in 1989. It requires parties to find new scientific information and innovations for stopping ozone layer depletion. Hence statement 2 is correct.
  • Ozone itself is a greenhouse gas at the surface of the earth. Hence statement 3 is correct.

The major Greenhouses gases are-

  • Carbon Dioxide, Ozone, Water Vapour, Nitrous Oxide, Carbon Monoxide, Fluorinated gases etc.
  • Greenhouses gases are those gases which are capable of trapping the out-going infrared radiation from the earth’s surface thereby causing a greenhouse effect.

Kigali Agreement-

  • It amends the 1987 Montreal Protocol.
  • It was formulated in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda in October 2016.
  • It binds countries to reduce HFCs reduction schedule from 2019. 
  • This introduced the concept of Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities.
  • The aim of this agreement is to curb global warming by arresting a global average temperature rise at 0.5 degrees.
