Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) is the head of Indian Armed forces and the head of the Department of Military Affairs, under the Ministry of Defence.
The office was created in December 2019.
General Bipin Rawat was the first CDS of India, taking charge from January 2020.
He will serve the full three-year term.
