  • Lord Curzon in 1900, under the Chairmanship of Sir Anthony McDonnel, appointed a commission to enquire into the famine which had occurred in Bengal and Bihar in 1873-74.
  • The Commission recommended that the official machinery must deal with the issue to prevent loss of lives.
  • McDonnel became the president of the Indian Famine Commission in 1901.

  • Antony MacDonnell was born on 7 March 1844.
  • In 1886, he was appointed as Home Secretary to the Central Government of India.
  • In 1889, he became Chief Commissioner of Burma.
  • In 1890, he became the Chief Commissioner of the Central Provinces. 
  • In 1893, he became the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal.
  • His book, 'Food-Grain Supply and Famine Relief in Bihar and Bengal' was published in 1876. It is based on the famine issue in Bengal and Bihar in 1873.
  • He died on 9 June 1925.
