Direction: Each question below is followed by two statements I and II. You have to determine whether the data given in the statement is sufficient for answering the question. You should use the data and your knowledge of Mathematics to choose the best possible answer.

From class X, 37.5% of the boys pass the exam. Calculate the total number of students who pass the exam.

Statement I. Girls are 40% of the number of boys.

Statement II. 20 girls pass the exam.

1. The statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question but, statement II alone is not sufficient.
2. The statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question but, statement I alone is not sufficient.
3. Both the statements I and II together are needed to answer the question.
4. Either statement I alone or statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question.
5. Neither statement I nor statement II is sufficient to answer the question.

Correct Answer - Option 5 : Neither statement I nor statement II is sufficient to answer the question.

Concept Used:

Total students = Number of Boys + Number of Girls

Statement I.

Girls are 40% of the number of boys.

⇒ Girls : Boys = 2 : 5

So, here we cannot get the total number of students who pass the exam

Statement I alone is not sufficient

Statement II.

20 girls pass the exam

Total number of students is not given

So, here we cannot get the total number of students who pass the exam

Statement II alone is not sufficient

Combining Statement I and Statement II

Total number of students who pass the exam is not given

So, even after combining we cannot calculate the number of students who pass the exam

Neither statement I nor statement II is sufficient to answer the question.
