Correct Answer - Option 4 : 1857

The correct answer is 1857.

  • The revolt of 1857 started on 10th May when the Company’s Indian soldiers at Meerut rebelled.
    • It is also called the Sepoy Mutiny by the British.
      • It is now also known as the 'First War of Independence' against the British rulers.
  • Their policy of annexation called Doctrine of Lapse led to many independent kingdoms being annexed to the British Empire.
  • Lord Dalhousie annexed the Maratha States of Satara, Nagpur, Jhansi, and several other minor kingdoms.
  • The main event which became the immediate cause of the war was the refusal of the Sepoys to use the grease-covered cartridges (greased with the fat of pig and cow) on January 23, 1857.
    • At the same time, an Indian sepoy killed two British officers at Barrackpore, when he was forced to use greased cartridges.
    • First came the desperate struggles at Delhi, Kanpur, and Lucknow during the summer; then the operations around Lucknow in the winter of 1857–58, directed by Sir Colin Campbell; and finally the “mopping up” campaigns of Sir Hugh Rose in early 1858.
