Base Period: It is defined as the total time between the first watering done for the preparation of land for sowing a crop and the last watering done before its harvesting. It is denoted by B and expressed in days.

Duty: It is usually defined as the area of land in hectares that can be irrigated for growing any crop if one cumec of water is applied continuously to the land for the entire base period. It is denoted by D and expressed in hectares/cumec.

Delta: It is the total depth of water applied over an irrigated land at different watering throughout the entire base period of the crop. It is denoted by symbol △ and expressed in cm or m.

Relation between B, D, and ∆:

\({\bf{Δ }} = 8.64\frac{{\bf{B}}}{{\bf{D}}}\;{\bf{m}}\)
