  • In 1781, Warren Hastings, the first Governor-General of India set up a Madrassa in Calcutta for the study and teaching of Muslim law.

  • In September 1780, a delegation of Calcutta Muslim presented petitions to him to establish a madrasa for the instruction of young Muslims.
  • After the establishment of the Calcutta Madrasa under the control of the Maulavi Muiz-ud-din launched education with ninety students.
  • Developments under Warren Hastings (1774 AD-1785 AD ):
    • He became Governor of Bengal in 1772 AD and first Governor-General of Bengal in 1773 AD, through the Regulating Act.
    • Established India’s first Supreme Court in Calcutta.
    • He founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal with William Jones in 1784 AD and wrote the introduction to the first English translation of the Gita by Charles Wilkins.
    • A translation of the code in Sanskrit appeared under the title ‘Code of Gentoo laws’.
    • First Anglo-Maratha War during his period, which ended with the Treaty of Salbai (1776 AD-1782 AD).

    • Rohilla War in 1774 AD.
    • Pitt’s India Act, 1784.
    • Revenue Reforms: Divided Bengal into districts and appointed Collectors other revenue officials.

  • Warren Hastings ended the dual system of government in 1772 AD.
