Correct Answer - Option 1 : Stratosphere

The Correct Answer is Stratosphere.

  • Ninety percent of the ozone in the atmosphere is occupied by the stratosphere, the layer of the atmosphere between about 10 and 50 kilometers altitude.
  • The natural level of ozone in the stratosphere is a result of a balance between sunlight that creates ozone and chemical reactions that destroy it.
  • The Earth's atmosphere consists of several layers.
    • The lowest layer, the troposphere, extends from the Earth's surface up to about 6 miles or 10 kilometers in altitude.
    •  The next layer, the stratosphere, continues from 6 miles to about 31 miles.
    • Ozone is a molecule that contains three oxygen atoms.
      • Ozone molecules are constantly formed and destroyed in the stratosphere
      • The ozone layer in the stratosphere absorbs a portion of the radiation from the sun, preventing it from reaching the planet's surface.
      • It absorbs the portion of the UV light called UVB.

Thermosphere:-

  • The thermosphere is the layer in the Earth's atmosphere directly above the mesosphere and below the exosphere.
  • Within this layer of the atmosphere, ultraviolet radiation causes photoionization/photodissociation of molecules, creating ions, the thermosphere thus constitutes the larger part of the ionosphere.

Mesosphere:-

  • The mesosphere is directly above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere.
  • It extends from about 31 to 53 miles above our planet.
  • Temperature decreases with height throughout the mesosphere.

Troposphere:-

  • The troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere and the site of all weather on Earth.
  • The troposphere is bounded on the top by a layer of air called the tropopause, which separates the troposphere from the stratosphere, and on the bottom by the surface of the Earth.
