• People need to be made aware that what affects the world affects them as well. Therefore, World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June every year for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
• World Environment Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
• The theme of this year was "biodiversity – a concern that is both urgent and existential".
