Correct Answer - Option 2 : Selma Lagerlof
  • The first woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature was Selma Lagerlöf (Sweden) who won the prize in 1909. Selma became a member of the Swedish Academy - the body that awards the prize, in 1909.
  • The Nobel committee described her work as lofty, vivid and spiritual, mostly known for her children's books.
  • Most famous work: The Wonderful Adventures of Nils – the 1906 book follows the life of a young boy named Nils Holgersson.
  • NOTE- The Nobel Prize and Prize in Economic Sciences have been awarded to women 58 times between 1901 and 2020. Only one woman, Marie Curie, has been honoured twice, with the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics and the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. This means that 57 women in total have been awarded the Nobel Prize between 1901 and 2020.
