How many moles of sodium propionate should be added to 1 L of an aqueous solution containing 0.020 moles of propionic acid to obtain a buffer solution of pH 4.75? What will be pH if 0.010 moles of HCI are dissolved in the above buffer solution. Compare the last pH value with the pH of 0.010 M HCI solution. Dissociation constant of propionic acid, K o at 25°C is 1.34 x 10-5.

Best answer

Let the moles of sodium propionate added = x

Concentration of sodium propionate = x/1 = x

Moles of propionic acid = 0.020

Concentration of propionic acid = 0.020/1 = 0.020

pH = pKa + log([salt]/[Acid])
