In order to maintain law and order in the village, the rule of people selected by the government is said to be Panchayati Raj. Now it functions as a system of governance in which gram panchayats are the basic units of local administration.
The system has three levels:
- Gram Panchayat (village level),
- Block Samiti or Panchayat Samiti (block level),
- Zila Parishad (district level).
