The ship and the mariners were in a hopeless situation. The ship was surrounded by huge icebergs which blocked its movement. The arrival of the albatross was hailed by the mariners. The auspicious bird brought a favourable south wind for the ship. Even the helmsman was able to steer the ship clear through the icebergs. The mariners hailed the arrival in God’s name as it was a symbol of life and warmth.
