I get confused on using the formulas for finding intensity, can you explain when to use them?

Its just a single formula (centre one), rest are just derived from it

The formula: I=Iocos2Ø is used when the light with intensity 'I' is passed through one polaroid and its angle from the vertical is 'Ø'

Intensity of incident light should be 'Io' not 'I'
