Let total number of children = x 

And number of books distributed to each child is y 

⇒ Total no of books = xy.

By the sum, y = 1/8x .....   (1)

and 1/2x x 16 = xy

⇒ y = 8

⇒ x = 64

∴ Total number of note books distributed is 64 x 8 = 512.
