Two large charged plane sheets of charge densities \( \sigma \) and \( -2 \sigma C / m ^{2} \) are arranged vertically with a separation of \( d \) between them. Deduce expressions for the electric field at points (i) to the left of the first sheet, (ii) to the right of the second sheet, and (iii) between the two sheets.

Best answer

(i) To the left of the first sheet

\(\vec {E} = \vec {E_1} + \vec {E_2}\)

\(\vec E = - \frac{\bar v}{2\varepsilon_0}\hat r+ \frac{2\bar v}{2 \varepsilon_0}\hat r\)

(ii) Between the plates

\(\vec E_{II} = - \frac{\bar v}{2\varepsilon_0}\hat r+ \frac{2\bar v}{2 \varepsilon_0}\hat r\)

(iii) Region right at the sheet

\(\vec E_{III} = - \frac{\bar v}{2\varepsilon_0}\hat r- \frac{2\bar v}{2 \varepsilon_0}\hat r\)
