DESCRIPTION:Topological phases of matter have fascinated resea
rchers since over 30 years. Indeed\, this year's N
obel prize joins the two Nobel awards for the quan
tum Hall effects in commending this unique field.
In my talk\, I will start with the quantum Hall ef
fect and demonstrate how it is related to topologi
cal pumps. Using Laughlin's argument\, we shall se
e how such pumps are best understood in the contex
t of time-dependent electronic (fermionic) systems
. I will\, then\, present our realizations of topo
logical pumps using two completely different boson
ic systems\, namely\, using coupled photonic waveg
uide arrays and with trapped atoms in optical supe
rlattices. In the second part of my talk\, I will
detail the connection between quasicrystals and to
pological pumps. In this context\, we have found t
hat quasicrystals inherit topological attributes f
rom their corresponding pumps\, i.e.\, quasicrysta
ls are characterized with topological indices from
dimensions higher than their own. I will discuss
several 1D quasi-periodic models with nontrivial 1
st Chern numbers and topological boundary states\,
which are inherited from the 2D quantum Hall effe
ct. This topological classification leads to sever
al interesting physical implications. Last\, I wil
l present how this naturally leads to realizing th
e 4D quantum Hall effect in the lab.\n \n
