The specific latent heat of fusion of water is known to be 80 cal/g. Given that 1 cal = 4.2J, 1 kg = 2.205 pound, 1 m = 3.28 feet, the value of this specific latent heat, in FPS units, is

(1) 1102 x 103 FPS units

(2) 3615 x 103 FPS units

(3) 102 x 103 FPS units

(4) 31.2 x 103 FPS units

Best answer

(2) 3615 x 103 FPS units

We have,

[Specific latent heat] = (Heat energy/mass) = [ML2T-2/M] = [L2T-2]

∴ Unit of surface tension in SI units / Unit of surface tension in FPS system

= (m/ft)2 (1s/1s)-2

= (3.28 feet / 1 feet)2 (1) = 10.76

∴ Specific latent heat of water = 80 cal/g = 80 x 4.2J/(10-3kg)

= 336 x 103 J/kg = 336 x 103 (m2s-2)

= (336 x 103 x 10.76) FPS Units

≅ 3615 × 103 FPS Units
