The Young’s modules of copper is known to have a value 1.3 x 1010 in CGS units. Given that 1 pound = 453.5 g, 1 foot ≅ 30.5 cm, the value of Young’s modulus of copper, in FPS units, is:

(1) (8.7 x 108) FPS units

(2) (8.7 x 1010) FPS units

(3) (7.24 x 105 ) FPS units

(4) (7.24 x 106 ) FPS units

Best answer

(1) (8.7 x 108) FPS units

We have,

[Y] = (Stress/Strain) = [MLT-2/L-2] = [ML-1T-2]

∴ Unit of Y in CGS units/Unit of Y in FPS units

= (g/pound) (cm/ft)-1 (1s/1s)-2

= (g/45.5g) (cm/30.5 cm)-1 (1)

= 30.5/453.5 ≅ 0.067

∴ 1.3 x 1010 CGS units = 1.3 x 00.67 x 1010 FPS units

= 0.087 x 1010 FPS units

= 8.7 x 108 FPS Units
