A simple pendulum, having a bob of mass m, is suspended from the roof of a car. It is observed that when the car starts moving with an acceleration a, the string, of the pendulum, gets inclined at an angle α to the vertical. The acceleration, a, of the car, and the tension, T, in the string of the pendulum are, then, given by
(1) a = g sec α ; T = mg tan α
(2) a = g tan α ; T = mg sec α
(3) a = g tan α ; T = mg tan α
(4) a = g sec α ; T = mg sec α
