A researcher's membership on an advisory board with an organization sponsoring research can create a COI because at times the consequences can be lethal. Researchers may be more concerned with the organization sponsoring the research, than they are with their patients.

COI stands for Conflict of Interest. There are many reasons for which a researcher’s work or membership from the advisory board or with an organization that sponsors the research is capable of creating a COI. A few possible reasons are -

1. The research could have false results or may be plagiarized.

2. The research guide and the advisory board members could have internal or personal conflicts.

3. There may be ego issues and difference of opinion in between the advisory members.

4. The members could feel that the research is not worth sponsoring as there might not be any satisfactory results or because it may be difficult.
